Our Earth Month celebration continues with another holiday highlighting the importance of trees!

This year is the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day! To celebrate this, we will plant 150 trees!

What’s Arbor Day?

Arbor Day is a day to celebrate trees. In the last 50 years, the Arbor Day Foundation has planted almost 500 million trees around the world! Arbor Day started in the state of Nebraska in the United States in 1872. Since then, the idea spread across the United State of America, and then to countries all over the world.

Trees are very important! People realized this after moving from areas with lots of trees to the western US, which did not have many trees. Besides their beauty, trees had other benefits. Trees provide oxygen which we need to breathe, shade in the hot summer sun, and protection from the wind. We use wood from trees for shelter or heat. Today we also know more about other benefits of trees. Some types of trees can provide us with food. Many of your favorite fruits and nuts come from trees. Trees also play a very important role in helping the environment.

What do trees have to do with air?

All trees produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. They help make our air better. There are many different types of trees that grow in different places. There are big trees, like the great redwood trees that can grow taller than a skyscraper. There are small trees, like the mini bonsai trees that can stay the size of a football.

How can I help plant trees?

We are partnering with OneTreePlanted and for every kid that completes our Earth Month Challenge or the Arbor Day Bonus Challenge, we will plant a tree!

And that’s not all, keep checking this page for updates.

This summer, we will officially launch the Air for Kids Challenges. These are great activities for school classes or kids to do with their parents this summer. And for each kid that completes three of those challenges, we will plant a tree!

Want another Air for Kids Challenge now?

The Arbor Day Bonus Challenge

As you learned from the Earth Day Challenge, air pollution is a huge problem. And now, as you know, trees can be a part of fixing this problem. Complete this bonus challenge and we will plant an additional tree!

  1. First, read more about trees here
  2. Then, show us what you learned. Draw a picture or write a poem about how trees help the planet.
  3. Have an adult (parent, guardian, teacher) submit your work using this form.

For every kid that completes this challenge before May 15, we will plant a tree.
